Pygmalion and Henry Higgins

Pygmalion and Henry Higgins The notetaker, primarily known as Henry Higgins, has a tendency to come off as being a jerk and really self centered. Since his profession is phonetics and speech, Higgins tends to have this mentality of him being better than everyone else and people who arent like him, arent worth his time. This causes Higgins to judge everyone he sees. The main person he focuses on is the flower girl, and is also known as Eliza Doolittle. Eliza was first seen on the side of the street selling herself, she wasnt the best dressed and she also didnt talk like a lady, so Higgins being the jerk that he is known for starts off degrading her as a person and treats her like she isnt valuable or worth of anyones time. The only reason why nobody has left him or has turned against him is, because in his heart he is good and a harmless man, but he biggest fault is being a bully. Relationships can capture such a great friendship between two people that could go on for years, but Higgins had the mindset that only focusing on himself was the most valuable thing in the world. In the beginning of Act 1, Higgins and Elizas relationship started to form. Although he had a slight tendency to come off as rude to her in the most negative ways, Higgins knew that his relationship with the flower girl would have to grow, because of the bet he made with Colonel Pickering that he could turn her into a lady before the garden party. Even though during the time Higgins was helping her, he would still treat the flower girl like she was worthless of everyones time. In Act IV, Higgins comes off as somewhat pleasant to the flower girl, making it seem as if his relationship changed throughout the play. As we get to the end of the play, Higgins has completely changed his mind about Eliza, he now realizes that, because of her, HIggins now looks at the world differently. Five minutes ago you were like a milestone around my neck. Now youre a tower of strength: a consort battleship. Higgins now believes that he is very proud of her, and he accepts the way she is. His relationship with Eliza did start off as unpleasant, and now that Higgins realizes that he does now respect Eliza, he wouldnt mind keeping her in his life as a long life friend. Relationships can be a beautiful thing between two people, but it all depends on how you view the world and how you value people. Some of our values and beliefs have a way of catching up to us in the end, they can often make us better as a person or make us turn into an unpleasant person for everyone to see. The way we value people, and what we believe as a person determines our actions towards certain individuals and situations that we get ourself in. Higgins, the notetaker, is influenced by his social class, and his beliefs as a person. The way Higgins was grown accustomed to acting the way he did, because of being raised in that type of environment, caused him to act a certain way towards people who are beneath him and superior to him. Although Higgins was somewhat of a bully, he still had a very good heart on his hands. As the play, Pygmalion, came to an end, Higgins learns that people are more than a social class, and also a social class does not determine your intelligence or the kind of person you turn out to be. Higgins believed that if you werent from the right social class, and you came of as unworthy, he wouldnt even give you the time of day, because he felt as if you didnt deserve it. In Act II, Higgins repeated, Shall we ask his baggage to sit down, or shall we throw her out the window? Higgins was not impressed with her or the way she dressed, he orders her away, because he had enough her Lisson Grove lingo. As time went on, and Higgins finally opened up his mind a little bit more, in Act V, he told Eliza I said id make a woman of you;and I have, I like you like this. His beliefs changed towards the end, and realized that not everything is about which social class youre from, it all depends on how good of a person you are. In conclusion to the play Pygmalion, the way Higgins perceives his roles, helped him grow as a person. He now has an open mindset to many different social classes, and how he looks at the world. He now has learned that not only does your social class not define you as a person, but he has also learned to actually get to know someone before he goes out and judges them.

How to Throw a Baseball

Throwing of a Baseball There are many different factors that come into play when you are learning to throw a baseball. Some of these factors are the grip of the baseball, the proper throwing position, the delivery of the throw, the follow through and other throwing mechanics. Learning to grip the baseball correctly is a key to throwing well. Grip the ball firmly but not tightly. You are not trying to choke the baseball. You want to place your thumb under the baseball and your forefinger and middle finger on top of the ball. Place the ball on the fingertips and not deep in the palm for greater accuracy and control when you throw.Make sure your fingers and thumb are across the seams and not placed on the seams. This placement helps the ball stay on a straight path. As you get more experience, you will be able to throw with the seams to get additional movement on the ball. The proper throwing position requires you to square yourself to the target. If you are right-handed, you want your left shoulder pointed at the player who is going to catch the ball. The instep of your right foot should also be facing your target. Raise the ball to ear level. If you are left-handed, it should be done in the opposite manner.Make sure your elbow is higher than your shoulder. You are now ready to throw the baseball. The delivery requires you to keep your eyes focused on your target as you begin the throwing process and keep them there throughout your delivery. Step with your front foot toward the target, beginning the transfer of your weight from back to front. As you step forward, bend your front knee and bring your arm forward. As your arm gets into an extended position, snap your wrist forward and release the ball. Your middle finger should be pointed directly at the target, allowing you to have greater accuracy and velocity on your throw.The follow through is when you continue moving forward with your arm after the ball has been released. Bring your back leg around so it is sli ghtly in front of your opposite leg. Your arm will continue to move, and you should bring it to a spot on the outside of your frame between your thigh and hip. Your upper body should be over your feet when you finish the throwing process. Never simply stop the throwing motion after you release the ball. That could cause shoulder and/or elbow injuries. Follow through fully after releasing the ball. You can throw a baseball without pitching it, but you can't pitch a baseball without throwing it.This emphasizes that pitching is all about defeating the batter. And throwing is a component of the pitching process. But throwing in itself does not constitute pitching. The difference between pitching mechanics and throwing mechanics. In reality, there should be no difference, but more often than not what is deemed as good pitching mechanics is more about defeating the batter than it is about throwing a baseball. Effective throwing is efficient use of the body to throw the baseball. Effective throwing is the least amount of wasted effort necessary to achieve the desired throwing result.There are two primary components at work in throwing a baseball: strength and mechanics. The strength component can manifest itself in several ways. The good way is when the strength component works in conjunction with the mechanical component primarily in the form of maintaining what is called connection during a transfer of momentum from the larger body parts and the arm itself. One interesting aspect of throwing is that once the momentum has been drained out of the torso, the action of the arm is far more passive and active. The arm behaves more like a whip that has been driven by the body.The negative aspect of arm strength is when the arm itself becomes the primary factory to throw the baseball. This can also be described as disconnection. A consequence of this disconnection forces the arm-shoulder complex to become more active than it should in terms of throwing a baseball. The play er is trying to make up for the lack of efficient transfer of momentum by â€Å"muscling† the ball to the plate. So the main points of throwing a baseball is the grip of the baseball, the proper throwing position, the delivery of the throw, the follow through and other throwing mechanics.

A Critique of Aristotle Politics

Introduction This paper aims to discuss the thoughts of Aristotle as the philosopher of his time. The paper will examine the applicability of his ideas in the world today. It will analyze the ethics of Aristotle against the way today’s governance. This paper will offer an informed critique of Aristotle’s politics. The paper will discuss the prepositions of Aristotle and the merits and demerits associated with each leadership. Discussion Aristotle politics looks at the world scientifically and can differentiate the ideal and the practical.In his book one of politics, Aristotle outlines the different types of governments that he perceives. In each of these types of governance, he gives the sound and the bad. According to Aristotle, the philosopher king is the ideal governance. In this form, the kings’ interest is in the welfare of his people (Tacitus & Benario 18). The highest form of governance is the monarchy. It is hereditary in nature, and people can associate freely with the royal family. In a monarchy, the interests of the nation take priority above all other matters. When the respectable leadership of a monarchy becomes rogue, Aristotle terms it as tyranny.When leadership becomes self seeking the citizens of this state, suffers thus; cannot achieve happiness (Chuska 277). Aristotle considers aristocracy of philosophers to be the second best leadership. When this form of leadership gets crooked, it becomes oligarchy. Further, he views democracy as the worst form of leadership. In his opinion, the third best form of leadership is one whose polity would combine all the noble forms of leadership. According to Aristotle, a polity is a constitution. Aristotle is of the opinion that, for a polity to be viable, it has to consider the stability and security of its people.The aristocracy as Aristotle puts it is the rule of several. When a virtuous rule of law prevails the society enjoys solidity. In this rule, the needs of the wealthy get priori ty while the rest of the population gets neglected. This brings about class division, and discrimination on the basis of riches. The elite in the society protect and guard their status making it difficult to join the elite group from low class people. According to Aristotle, who was advocating for fairness, elitism in the society is wrong (Chuska 278). Polity is the rule of the majority. This is what Aristotle refers to as the rule of many.In the better form, it concerns with the needy. The leaders take office through an election. It is the citizens of the state who decide the person to rule over them. When this form of leadership becomes fraudulent, Aristotle refers to it as democracy. As Aristotle puts it when the mob rules the minority group suffers. However, in the opinion of Aristotle this corrupt form of polity is the best form of governance in the long run (Aristotle et al 297). In Aristotle’s analysis of the best form of a leader, he says it is that person who pursues virtue. To him virtues are decent habits acquired through legislation and moral education.According to Aristotle, leaders should not work; it is the state to provide for their needs. They should have property and sufficient time for leisure. This will enable them to pursue virtues. This practice is only possible in a monarchy. The views of Aristotle about a monarchy are noble. In the history of Roman Empire, there is a short duration when there was monarchy. The leaders commonly known as the five good empires operated a monarchy with success. The rule was successful without turning to dictatorship. Their interest was in the subjects. They resisted the allure of abusing the unlimited power of their rule.The emperor who took over from the last of the five was Commodus. He started out well following the ideals of a monarch. However, he gradually became corrupt. He started to make laws that were not pleasing to the people. The rules he made were not logical, and the people of the empir e were unhappy. He disregarded the virtues of a leader and started barking orders at a whim. He died by assassination by strangulation in his bath (Aristotle et al 300). This classic example gives reality to the opinions of Aristotle. Monarchy is a worthy form of leadership; however, when corrupt it is the worst form.According to Aristotle the second best form of government is aristocracy. Before the formation of the Roman Empire, there was the Roman republic. There was the rule of law in the republic; it lasted for four hundred years, an unusually long duration. Aristocracy may have succeeded within this duration, but it has the weakness that people do not choose the person to lead them. However, it finally failed when power became centralized. Aristotle advocates for balance between the one, few and many. This is a form of mixed government where the virtues of all the six forms of government combined.According to him this would bring stability and avoid the dangers that a monarchy poses to the society. In the world, today this form of government can be seen in the United Kingdom and the United States. There is a power balance among the three basic components stated by Aristotle. This brings about stability in the society (Chuska 278). Aristotle, in his politics, discusses how a state associates with it members. He maintains that the legitimacy of a government remains through serving it people and offering them a healthy life. According to Aristotle the happiness of the citizens is state is crucial.In his discourse, Aristotle talks of the contentment of the entire state, not just a segment of the state. The perfect society is one whose citizens show moral virtues this is achievable through an ideal government (Chuska 279). Aristotle puts emphasis on the human beings achieving their potentiality. According to him the successful government has to have citizens to choose the needs for their lives. A critical evaluation of the politics of Aristotle shows an incli nation towards communism and authoritarianism. However, in today's world the most successful forms of government are the representative democracies.This is because they include all the groups within the state without leaving out of the minority. The form of government that Aristotle proposes is practical. His concern is in the stability and security of the citizens. The members of a state need security in order to run their day to day activities. Thus, if there is a lack of order in the leadership the citizens suffer. Aristotle proposes a constitution which he calls a polity. He sees it as a long lasting solution to leadership problems as it offers a concrete form of governance. In the contemporary world, we have all forms of governments as discussed by Aristotle.The most successful ones are the democracy. Though they have their short falls, they are more practical compared with other forms of governments. The state has a duty towards the people; however, the people also have a resp onsibility for themselves. The world is competitive, and people cannot wait for the state to take care of them (Tacitus ; Benario 19). In conclusion, Aristotle's politics have an influence on political philosophy up to the present time. They contain thought provoking concerns about politics that governments should consider the quality of the life of their subject. He questions who should be the ruler of the people.Aristotle is keen to emphasize on the moral expectation and obligation of the state and their citizens. Macbeth Relationship Analysis - 1302 Words

MACBETH RELATIONSHIP ANALYSIS I found the relationship between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth very interesting in the play. In Act I they are completely devoted to each other. Love, respect and trust are the contents of their relationship. The trust in the relationship is revealed right at the beginning when Macbeth sends his wife a letter telling her about the witches and the predictions #8220;This have I thought good to deliver to thee, my dearest partner of greatness, that thee mightst not lose the dues of rejoicing by being ignorant of what greatness is promised thee.#8221; (I, v, 10-13). The affection between the two is clearly shown when Macbeth salutes his wife with #8220;My dearest love#8221; (I, v, 58) and also on the†¦show more content†¦When Macbeth becomes King the evil side of his nature takes over completely. He becomes a butcher and tyrant without any feeling of remorse. Before, he had to be persuaded by his wife to kill. Now, once a King, he doesn#8217;t eve n bother to tell her of his plans, like the murder of Banquo. He doesn#8217;t need his wife#8217;s support anymore; he has the power and therefore now controls the relationship. The relationship cools down. Lady Macbeth doesn#8217;t have the same effect over Macbeth as before. She is left over. In Act V we see clearly what happened to Lady Macbeth. She is now the person who broods about the dreadful things they have done, #8220;A great perturbation in nature, to receive at once the benefit of sleep and do the effects of watching!#8221; (Doctor, V, i, 8-10). She is frightened of the dark; #8220;She has light by her continually.#8221; (Gentlewoman, V, i, 21-22). She walks in her sleep and washes her hands all the time to get rid of the blood, #8220;Out, damned spot! Out, I say!#8221; (Lady Macbeth, V, i, 33). While Macbeth#8217;s spirit is broken. He thinks about how meaningless his life is. #8220;Out, out, brief candle! Life#8217;s but a walking shadow, a poor player th at struts and frets his hour upon the stage and is heard no more.
